Online stuff
Stuff I’ve bought (and you should too!)
  • Ron’s Renamer Formerly known as Batch File Renamer this is one of my secret weapons. If you are involved in documentation in any way then try this as it just may save your life (and don you with God-like powers!).
  • Advanced Find & Replace for Microsoft® Excel® Tried it - paid for it. It saved me so much time.
  • CleanUp! CleanUp! frees disk space and reduces the “clutter” on your computer helping it to run more efficiently. This is free to use but you should do the right thing and donate some money as a way of saying thank you.
  • Shortcuts Search And Replace is the quickest and easiest way to search your computer for shortcuts and either find dead links or replace matching patterns in their target paths.
Free(and freeish) software I use
  • OLD Opera I fell out with Opera when they ditched the old super-customisable Presto engine version but you can still download that here… I use v11.64 but anything up to v12.17 is ok by me.
  • Locate32 Possible the fastest way to find files on your computer
  • SUPERAntiSpyware - the best anti spyware software I’ve found (so far).
  • Comodo Internet Security Firewall & Antivirus all rolled into one.
  • IrfanView Image viewer, editor, batch converter. I use it nearly every day.
  • PSPad Much more than a simple text editor. It’s not exactly crash-proof BUT it’s still the best text editor with built in FTP capabilities to allow you to edit files directly on your server.
  • ComboFix This is a life saver - if your computer gets screwed up by a fake anti-virus program then go here and follow the instructions TO THE LETTER. ComboFix does take a while to run but IT WILL FIX YOUR COMPUTER.
  • ForentiT’s User Profile Wizard is the simplest way to merge Windows User Accounts if, like me, you need to clean up an old machine by getting rid of surplus accounts but want to keep the profile settings of one of them to use with another account. The Personal Edition of User Profile Wizard is free to download but check their website for a feature comparison between that and the more advance paid version, and also for the user guide.

Support our caregiving

If you found anything on this site of use, interesting, or even mildly amusing then please consider dropping a few pennies in the jar to help us to take care of our disabled son who contracted encephalitis in 2007 at the age of 6 and who is now confined to a wheelchair. He is getting bigger as his mother and I get older, imagine that, please. Every penny we collect goes towards his upkeep, and towards his future care requirements.

Thank you.
